Ontario’s homeschool process

The process to homeschool in Ontario is very easy.  Everything boils down to “Is your children enrolled in a schoolboard?” If they are then you must send the school board a Letter of Intent to homeschool.  If they are not, then it’s your choice.  It’s that easy! Is your child registered with a school board?

I’ve included links to the Ontario Education Act and the Ontario homeschooling policy below.

You can read about the Ontario Education Act here.

You can also read about Ontario’s  homeschooling policy here. It explains procedures for parents, school boards and resources you can access as a homeschooling parent.

Ultimately it boils down into two options.

Homeschooling in Ontario Option #1:

If your child has already be enrolled in a school board.

As a parent or guardian, you can choose to withdraw your children from your local school system to homeschool them at any time of the year.

There is one requirement.

You must send the school board notification in writing that you intend to homeschool.

The Ontario Federation of Teaching Parents has a great page with downloadable versions of the Letter of Intent.

The OFTP also suggests, “It is both common sense and common courtesy to also provide written notification to the principal of the school the child has been attending, for example by sending a copy of the letter of intent that was sent to the school board. In this way, the child will not be considered truant but will be understood to be excused from attendance under section 21(2)(a) of the Education Act.”

You should receive a letter back from the school board stating they received your letter.  Keep it filed safely.  You will need this letter if you wish to access services such as:

  • correspondence courses offered by the Independent Learning Centre (ILC) run by TVO
  • to gain access to CCAC services
  • for the child to be eligible to be included in the benefit unit when the parent is on ODSP or Ontario Works assistance

If they don’t send a letter back and you need one to access these services you can request one.  Just ask, they are usually great to respond.

Homeschooling in Ontario Option #2:

If your child has NEVER been enrolled in a school board.

Then it is your decision if you wish to file a Letter of Intent of not. Please refer to PPM #131.  However, in the future, if you or your child needs specfic services in the community. For example: ILC, CCAC, ODSP or Ontario Works. Registering your child will be required at that point. You can send in your Letter of Intent at that time.

Homeschooling alternatives – Private Schools

We know that for everyone, homeschooling isn’t the best option.  For your family, you need to find the best choice.  Parents need to search out what options are open to them.  What is the best fit for your child’s learning needs?  Will a larPrivate School optionge public school classroom work?  How about teacher vs student ratios?  Private schooling might provide a better environment for your child.

In this day and age, many times both parents want to work, at the same time, they also want a customized educational program for their child.  Similar to what homeschooling would offer.

Furthermore,  a serious illness or the medical needs of one child can undermine the ability to homeschool the other children in the family. Consequently, the parent struggles to meet the needs of the sick child and their siblings. Children need to be taught not lost in the shuffle of medical appointments and the understandable chaos an illness can bring to the family life.

As a result, issues like these cause families to reluctantly seek alternatives to homeschooling.  Therefore, it might be time to explore private schooling.

First of all, you need to know some things about private schools.  The Ontario government does not run private schools or independent schools.

Second, tax payer dollers do not fund private schools.  You will be required to pay tuition. The price of tuition flucuates greatly between schools.  So try to compare what you are getting from each school.   Explore the curriculum and the world view that the curriculum will be teaching your child.

Third, you will find that each school has unique qualities and a different take on education students.

Lastly, test score are not a good tool to use as a single deciding factor in choosing a school.  Test scores are easily manipulated.

Below you will find options for private schooling in the Windsor and Essex County areas.  Take time to explore their websites.

Don’t be Mrs. Ima Overwhelmed

Do you every feel like you are Mrs. Ima Overwhelmed???

Ima overwhelmed

One trick I like to tell new homeschooling parents is to sign up for a free gmail account. Use this address just to receive all the homeschooling newsletters, advertisements, blogs and generally anything connected to homeschooling that you don’t want cluttering up your regular email address.

For example: Mrs. Ima Overwhelmedwithemails would have her regular email account.
Ima.Overwhelmed@hotmail. – this is the email that family and friends contact her with.

Then she would have a second email account:
Ima.Overwhelmedhomeschooling@gmail. – this is the email she uses to sign up for newsletters, websites, blogs, etc.

So, why am I telling you this now???  Because I would like to start sharing some great websites with you and you might want to sign up with them.  Then after 20-30 websites your email box will be so full you’ll announce to me “I’m overwhelmed with all the great website you are sending us too!”  Then you will have become Mrs. Ima Overwhelmed.  🙂

One last hint!  Make the email easy to type in, you could be typing it in frequently! 🙂
